Will I poo myself during labour?
People often get caught up with the idea that they’re going to poo during labour. Truth is, you probably will!
It’s absolutely ok to as well- it’s actually a good sign. It tells the midwife that birth is imminent. But why do we poo during labour? It’s obvious really. Your rectum and vagina are so close in proximity, that the pressure of baby’s head as it descends will usually cause a very small amount of poo to come out.
Not only do midwifes like to see poo, they’re also experts at scooping it up before you or your partner even notice that it’s happened. They even have a special sieve for water births!
So yes, you will probably poo during labour. Please do not worry about this in the run- up to your birth because you definitely won’t be worrying about it during labour.
And once baby is born, poo is going to become a big part of your life- especially the poonami stage!
