England’s Maternity and Neonatal System “No Longer Fit For Purpose”.

The final report from Baroness Valerie Amos has been published recently and then findings are shocking but yet not surprising. She has concluded that England’s maternity and neonatal system is no longer fit for purpose. Amos argues that the ENTIRE maternity system requires structural and cultural change which absolutely needs to happen! We know that care can be unsafe and inconsistent (think about poor Louise Thompson), that families are not listened to when trying to make decisions they KNOW are right for them and their baby and that there are chronic staffing and capacity pressures. What we don’t know yet is what are they going to do about it. Yes they are appointing the first maternity and neonatal commissioner- which is fantastic, but when and who? They have told us that the new commissioner will provide “independent leadership to hold the system to account, drive change and rebuild trust” but my question is ‘how’?

The action plan will be published in December 2026 setting out their long-term plans to deliver safer and fairer care. What is great is the taskforce will be made up of clinicians, families and other experts meaning that there will be a number of eyes on the ball.

Now that this has all come to light, will we still see the same maternity failings between now and when the commissioner is appointed? What about all the pregnant women in the meantime that are still not being listened to? What about the persistent racial and socioeconomic inequalities that are still happening now?

Preparing for your birth has never been more imperative! Completing a hypnobirthing course will provide you with detailed, evidence-based knowledge that will leave you fully equipped for dealing with the maternity system and give you confidence to speak up for yourself. Reading a book, booking a few pregnancy relaxation classes simply won’t cut it anymore. If you want to have a positive birth outcome, you need to receive a full antenatal education. Take control of you birth, don’t let the system control you.

Now I know I am saying this quite forcefully but that is because I care. I care that you have a good birth experience. I want you to have the best possible start to parenthood, not spending the first few weeks, months recovering, wondering what would have happened if you’d just prepared more. So please, take a step towards a positive birth today.
